Here’s a mistake that costs California families real time every fall: assuming the Common App covers the University of California. It doesn’t. The UC system has its own application, its own deadline, and its own way of asking about your student, and if you don’t know that going in, you can lose weeks discovering it the hard way.
If your student is applying to UCs, here’s what’s actually different.
It’s a separate application entirely. One UC application covers all nine undergraduate campuses, but it lives on its own platform, not the Common App. The filing period runs through the fall, and the deadline is in late November, earlier than many regular Common App deadlines. Mark it separately.
There’s no single personal statement. Instead of a single essay, the UC application asks for Personal Insight Questions; the student picks four of eight prompts and answers each in up to 350 words. That’s four shorter, focused responses, not one long narrative. Students who plan for one big essay and discover four prompts in November feel blindsided. Plan for four from the start.
The activities and academic sections are structured differently. The UC application asks students to self-report coursework and grades in its own format, and to describe activities and awards in its own categories. The information overlaps with the Common App, but the boxes are not the same boxes.
And the CSU application is a third, separate thing. Cal State has its own system again, with its own process. A California student casting a wide net can easily be juggling three different applications at once.
