When we say every program in the GradMap Summer Programs Directory is “human-verified,” we mean something specific. Not a checkbox. Not an automated scan. A real human being looked at this program and confirmed certain things before it was allowed in.
We want to be transparent about what that process actually looks like, because families deserve to understand what they are getting when they use this directory and what distinguishes it from the dozens of other program lists online.
First: Is this program real?
This sounds basic, but it is not. The internet is full of summer programs with outdated listings, programs that ran once and never again, and programs that list dates and costs but have not accepted applications in years. We confirm that the program is currently operating, that applications are open or will open for the relevant season, and that the organization running it is legitimate.
If we cannot confirm a program is active, it does not go in the directory, regardless of how prestigious the name sounds.
Second: Does it do what it says it does?
A program that markets itself as a “pre-medicine research experience” should involve actual research under actual supervision. A leadership program should have real leadership development content, not just a week of activities with a leadership-adjacent name.
We look at curriculum descriptions, past participant reviews where available, and program structure. We are looking for substance behind the marketing language. Many programs are very good at describing themselves in aspirational terms. Our job is to assess whether the description matches the reality.
Third: Is it worth a student’s time?
This is the most subjective part of the process, and it requires real counseling experience to evaluate. Some programs are legitimate and well-run, but so low in substance that a student would be better served spending those weeks doing almost anything else. Some are expensive in ways that do not justify what students actually take away.
After 21 years of sending students to summer programs and tracking what actually moved the needle in their applications and their lives, I have developed strong opinions about what makes a program worth a student’s time. That judgment is baked into every listing decision we make.
What we do not verify
We want to be honest about this, too. We do not guarantee admissions outcomes. Being in the GradMap directory does not mean a program will help your student get into any particular college; no program can honestly promise that. What we can tell you is that the programs listed offer real, substantive benefits.
We also do not verify cost as a criterion for inclusion. Some programs are expensive. We note costs where available so families can make informed decisions, but a high price does not disqualify a program any more than a free program is automatically better.
Please remember that the costs of living on campus can add up over the weeks, as can the time of instructors, mentors, or program organizers.
Why this matters
Families spend real money on summer programs. Students invest real time. And for many students, the summer before junior year is one of the most important developmental windows in their high school career. We do not take lightly the responsibility of recommending where that time and money go.
